THREE pre-teens have become firm friends, united by the difficult journey that lies ahead for them - transitioning from male to female while still only children. Though they have not yet even begun high school, Lily, Fiana and Zuri have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria and will soon undergo medical intervention to prevent their bodies changing from that of boys to men. Lily, 11, from the Austin area of Texas, has already begun taking hormone blockers to prevent her going through male puberty - a decision her parents wrestled with before undertaking.

 

A TRANSGENDER and non - binary couple are teaching their child that gender and sexuality are fluid. Seven-year-old Claire from Monterey, California, is the daughter of Blue and Emerson, who have been together a little over two years. Claire’s mother Blue said: "I think it is important to speak to children about these aspects because for example like both of us were put into the box as a girl from the birth, and we have this expectations.

 

Researching and preparing for our new movie 'FREE', (younger sibling/sequel to our teenage film FIT) We spent an afternoon at the South Bank Centre filming kids of gay parents - and straight parents - and bi parents and undefinable parents. This is some of what they taught us.

In 2018, Rebecca Sugar's "Steven Universe" featured both the first LGBTQ wedding and the first LGBTQ marriage proposal in a kids' animated TV show. And in 2020, Benson from "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts" was the first kids' animated character to directly identify themselves as gay. These are groundbreaking achievements in LGBTQ representation, but it took a long time and a lot of hard work to get here. Here's a look back at how LGBTQ characters in kids' shows evolved from Hays Code-era stereotypes and queer-coded villains.

 

In Sweden, the gender neutral pronoun “hen” has been in the national dictionary since 2015 and is now commonly used by most Swedes, the Swedish government’s school plan has since 1998 forbidden enforcing gender stereotypes, and government funded gender neutral kindergartens with gender aware teachers has made it possible for families to raise their children without a set gender identity, something that often sparks controversy in the foreign press.

 

At the age of two, Lily Nichols tore the pink Easter bow out of her hair and, using the few words she knew, repeatedly told her mum Vanessa to, 'Take off’. From that moment on Vanessa, and then husband Dustin, from Venice, Florida realised their daughter was going to be different to other girls her age. But, far from simply going through a tomboy phase, Lily has already talked about becoming a boy when she is older: changing her name and having surgery. Despite this, Vanessa says she is in no rush to put labels on her now seven-year-old daughter and hasn’t even introduced Lily to the word transgender.

Having a family member or caregiver who openly identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ) is becoming more common. It’s nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about, because it reflects the different types of families that exist. However if you have an LGBTQ family member or caregiver, you may feel like you are different from other kids at school. Your friends’ families might look different, or you may not see your family represented in what you are learning in school. You may even hear hurtful things said about LGBTQ people. You are not alone. There are lots of kids who have LGBTQ family members, and most people generally know someone who is LGBTQ, even if they’re not in that person’s family

 

My Shadow is Pink is about a young boy, born with a pink shadow that loves princess, dresses & "things not for boys". This is a story of daring to be different, and having the courage to be true to yourself.
